To purify the surface water i.e. Pond water, River water etc need not to treat with RO System. Because Surface water contains Suspended material that can be easily removed by slow sand filter. Otherwise one can go for some cogulating material followed by Filteration. RO is not a suitable treatment option due to High implementation cost and High wastage of Water. the other problem associated with surface water is Biological contamination that can be removed by Chlorination process at community and household level both. At house hold level in Southern part of India SODIS (Solar Disinfection) process can play an importent role to prevent Biological contamination, Because this part of country is getting good solar radiation with high Temperature. this process is totaly free of cost. you have to take a good quality PET Bottel and then Paint black in Half side of Bottel then fill it with water and keep it in Sun light for 6-8 hours.
