(Definition) 3. A stoma is a pore, found for instance in leaves, that is used by plants for gas exchanges with the atmosphere. Air containing carbon dioxide and oxygen necessary for photosynthesis and respiration enters the plant through these openings while the oxygen produced by photosynthesis is expelled through them. These exchanges include a release of water vapour to the atmosphere (transpiration).
