इसका उपयोग नदी के जलस्तर के निर्धारण के लिए किया जाता है। यह निर्धारण जल सतह पर एक भार को नीचे कर दिया जाता है। यह अधिकतर सेतुओं पर लगा होता है तथा इसको रील, जिसपर तार बंधी होती है, के साथ लगे यांत्रिक गणक द्वारा पढ़ा जाता है।
